What are embedded (indirect) questions?

Embedded questions are questions inside another sentence using statement word order: 'Do you know where the station is?' (not 'where is the station'). Common starters include 'Do you know...', 'Can you tell me...', and 'I wonder...'.

Why don't subject questions use do/does/did?

When who or what IS the subject, no auxiliary is needed: 'Who called you?' (who = subject). But when who/what is the object, you need an auxiliary: 'Who did you call?' (you = subject, who = object).

What is the difference between who and whom?

'Who' is for subjects: 'Who called?' 'Whom' is for objects: 'Whom did you call?' In modern English, 'who' is used in most situations. A test: answer with 'he/she' = who; answer with 'him/her' = whom.

When do you use do, does, and did in questions?

The auxiliary verbs "do", "does", and "did" are used to form questions in present simple and past simple tenses. They are NOT used with "be", modal verbs (can, will, should), or when the wh- word is the subject of the question.
