Wh- Question Words (Easy) — Who, What, Where Exercises

Wh- question words are special words that begin open questions — questions that need more than just 'yes' or 'no.' The three most common wh- words are who (for people), what (for things and information), and where (for places). For example: 'Who is your teacher?' asks about a person, 'What is your name?' asks about information, and 'Where do you live?' asks about a place. These words always come at the start of the question.

A common mistake is mixing up who and what when asking about jobs. In English, we say 'What is your job?' or 'What do you do?' — not 'Who is your job?' because 'what' asks about things and activities. However, we say 'Who is your doctor?' because we want the name of a person. Another tip: 'where' only asks about places — for time, use 'when,' and for reasons, use 'why.'
