There Is / There Are Easy Exercises

There is and there are are used to say that something exists in a place or situation. Use there is with singular nouns and uncountable nouns: "There is a lamp by the bed" and "There is some milk in the fridge." Use there are with plural nouns: "There are two lamps in the room." This is one of the first grammar patterns English learners meet because it helps you describe rooms, towns, classrooms, pictures, and daily life. It is useful because learners often need to say what they can see, what a place has, or what is available in a real situation.

The most important step is to look at the noun phrase after the verb. If the real noun is singular, choose is. If it is plural, choose are. If the noun is uncountable, like water, homework, or music, use there is. Beginner mistakes usually happen when learners see words like some and guess too fast without checking the noun itself. A good habit is to stop, find the main noun, and then choose the verb.
