What is a superlative adjective in English?

A superlative adjective shows that one person, place, or thing is at the top or bottom of a group. For example, "the tallest student" means no other student in the group is taller. Superlatives usually compare three or more things, or one thing against all others in a set: "the coldest day of the year", "the most interesting book I have read", "the best pizza in town". They are different from comparatives, which compare two things: "taller than", "more interesting than". In most learner writing, superlatives need "the" before the adjective.

When do I use -est and when do I use the most?

Use "the" + adjective + -est with most one-syllable adjectives: "the tallest", "the coldest", "the fastest". Use "the most" + adjective with longer adjectives, especially words with three or more syllables: "the most expensive", "the most beautiful", "the most difficult". Two-syllable adjectives need care. Adjectives ending in consonant + y usually change y to i and add -est, as in "the busiest" or "the happiest". Other two-syllable adjectives often use "the most", especially when that sounds clearer. Irregular adjectives do not follow either pattern: good becomes "the best" and bad becomes "the worst".

Do I always need the before a superlative?

In most complete superlative phrases, use "the": "the tallest building", "the most important lesson", "the best player". The word "the" helps show that you are identifying one specific item in a group. There are exceptions. After a possessive, do not add "the": say "my best friend", not "my the best friend". In short questions or informal answers, speakers sometimes drop "the", as in "Which is cheapest?" but full forms are better for exams and learner writing. If you are unsure, write the full phrase with "the" unless another determiner, such as "my" or "this", is already present.
