Reported Speech Final Test

This test covers every aspect of reported speech studied in this module: tense backshift across all tenses (present → past, past → past perfect, future → conditional), pronoun changes (I → he/she, my → his/her, we → they), time and place expression shifts (today → that day, here → there), yes/no questions with if/whether and statement word order, WH questions with the question word retained, commands with told/asked + to-infinitive, modal verb changes (can → could, will → would, must → had to), and advanced structures including passive voice reporting, conditional transformations, special reporting verbs, and emphatic inversions.

The test contains 30 questions arranged in progressive difficulty. Questions 1-10 are medium difficulty, covering the core transformations that form the foundation of reported speech. Questions 11-25 are hard, requiring you to apply multiple rules simultaneously within each sentence — for example, changing tense, pronouns, and time expressions all at once. Questions 26-30 are the most challenging, testing advanced structures like mixed conditionals, emphatic inversions, and special reporting verb patterns. The passing score is 21 out of 30 (70%). If you score below this threshold, review the specific topics where you made errors before retaking.

Yes, we strongly recommend completing all individual reported speech topic exercises before attempting this comprehensive test. You should have practised: present simple, past simple, present continuous, present perfect, future forms, modal verbs, commands, WH questions, yes/no questions, time and place expressions, and special cases. We recommend scoring at least 80% on each individual exercise before moving to the final test, as it assumes confident familiarity with all these topics. The three mixed practice exercises (easy, intermediate, advanced) are also excellent preparation for the final test format.
