By contrast, "yesterday," "last week," "in 2015," and "when I was young" are finished time periods — they are closed and complete, so English uses the past simple: "I drank three coffees yesterday." This distinction is one of the most reliably tested grammar points in Cambridge exams.

Why do English speakers switch between present perfect and past simple in conversation?

The present perfect introduces a topic or experience without specifying when: "I have been to Australia" — this opens the conversation by establishing that the experience exists. The past simple then adds specific details: "I went there in 2018. I stayed in Sydney for two weeks." This switch happens because once a specific time is mentioned, the past simple becomes the natural tense for narrating events. Think of it as zooming in: present perfect gives the wide-angle view (the experience exists), then past simple zooms into the specific occasion. Examiners test this pattern directly in B1 and B2 writing and speaking components.

How do I handle "present results" with present perfect?

Accepted Answer

A "present result" means that something happened in the past and its effect is still visible or relevant now. "I have broken my leg" means it happened recently and my leg is still broken — you can probably see the cast. Compare: "I broke my leg when I was twelve" uses past simple because the situation is completely in the past and no longer relevant to my current state. Other examples: "She has cut her hair" (you can see it looks different), "I have lost my wallet" (I still cannot find it), "He has painted the room" (the room is now a new colour). The key test is: does the result still matter right now? If yes, use present perfect. If the situation is resolved or distant, use past simple.
