Present Continuous: Basic Form Exercises
A1 Level
English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
The most common mistake beginners make is choosing the wrong form of "be" — remember, it must match the subject. "She are working" is wrong because "she" needs "is." Another frequent error is forgetting the -ing ending: "He is read" should be "He is reading." In spoken English, we often use short forms: "I'm working," "He's reading," "We're playing." These short forms are perfectly natural and correct. Practise matching each subject to the right form of "be" until it feels automatic.
Quick Rule
subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
- 1.I am learning English at a language school. (am with I)
- 2.She is cooking dinner in the kitchen. (is with he/she/it)
- 3.We are waiting for the bus outside. (are with we/you/they)
- 4.The children aren't sleeping yet. (negative with are not)
- 5.Look — it is raining again! (is with it for weather)
