What is the difference between "for" and "since"?

"For" answers the question "how long?" and is followed by a period of time: "for two hours," "for six months," "for a long time." "Since" answers the question "from when?" and is followed by a specific point in time: "since Monday," "since 2019," "since I was a child." Both are commonly used with the present perfect tense: "I have worked here for ten years" (duration) and "I have worked here since 2015" (starting point). A common mistake is using "since" with a duration: say "for three days" (not "since three days"). Remember: "for" + period (how long), "since" + point (from when). This difference is one of the most tested grammar points in Cambridge A2 and B1 exams.

What is the difference between "by" and "until"?

"By" means "not later than" — it sets a deadline for when something must be completed: "I must finish by Friday" means I need to finish on Friday or before. "Until" (or "till") means an action continues up to that point and then stops: "I will work until Friday" means I continue working, and on Friday I stop. Compare: "I need the report by 5 o'clock" (the deadline is 5 — it must be ready before or at that time) vs "I will be in the office until 5 o'clock" (I am in the office continuously, and at 5 I leave). A helpful way to remember: "by" is about a finish point, "until" is about a continuing action.

When do I use "during" instead of "while"?

"During" is a preposition followed by a noun or noun phrase: "during the meeting," "during lunch," "during the summer." "While" is followed by a subject and verb: "while we were eating," "while she slept," "while I was at work." They often describe the same situation in different ways: "I fell asleep during the film" = "I fell asleep while I was watching the film." The key difference is grammar, not meaning. Do not confuse "during" with "for": "during" tells us when something happened (during the meeting = at some point in the meeting), while "for" tells us how long (for two hours = the total length of time). Cambridge B1 exams often test this distinction.
