What is the difference between in, on, and at for place?

Think of these three prepositions as describing different relationships with a place. "In" means inside or within an enclosed space or area: "in the box" (inside it), "in Paris" (within the city). "On" means touching a surface or along a line: "on the shelf" (resting on the surface), "on the river" (along the river). "At" means at a specific point or location: "at the airport" (the general location, not necessarily inside). A useful test: if you can draw a circle around it, use "in"; if something touches it, use "on"; if you can point to it on a map, use "at." These three prepositions are among the most commonly tested items in Cambridge A2 and B1 English exams.

For specific street names, British English uses both: "a shop in Oxford Street" and "a shop on Oxford Street" are both acceptable. However, for street corners, "on the corner" is the most common form in both British and American English: "The bank is on the corner of King Street and Park Road." This is a useful detail for B1 and B2 level writing.
