Was/Were vs Did Part 4 — Advanced Patterns
B1-B2 Level
English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
Pay special attention to verbs that look like states but are actually actions. "He was being difficult" (past continuous of "be" — intentional behaviour, an action) vs "He was difficult" (past simple of "be" — a state, his personality). Similarly, "I didn't feel well" uses "didn't" because "feel" here is an action verb describing a physical experience, even though it describes a state-like condition. These borderline cases test your deeper understanding of English grammar. Mastering them is important for Cambridge B2 First and IELTS band 6+ performance, where grammar range and accuracy are key scoring criteria.
Quick Rule
Was/Were → "be" in all forms | Did → other verbs, even state-like ones (feel, seem, look)
- 1.She didn't seem happy, and I wasn't sure why.
- 2.Were you aware that the deadline didn't change?
- 3.The results weren't what we expected — they didn't match the data.
- 4.If the hotel wasn't available, did you try another one?
- 5.I didn't realise that the meeting was cancelled.
