Was/Were vs Did Part 2 — Mixed Contexts
A2-B1 Level
English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
At this level, you also encounter sentences where the choice is less obvious. "There was a problem" uses "was" because "there was" describes existence — a state. "The meeting didn't start on time" uses "didn't" because "start" is an action verb. Watch out for sentences with adjectives after verbs other than "be": "The food tasted good" is correct (no "did" needed here because it is not a question or negative). By practising mixed contexts, you develop the ability to switch between the two patterns naturally, which is essential for fluent conversation and for Cambridge B1 Preliminary exam success.
Quick Rule
Was/Were for "be" (states/descriptions) | Did/Didn't for all other verbs (actions)
- 1.Was the exam difficult, or didn't you study enough?
- 2.I was late because I didn't hear the alarm.
- 3.Were they happy when they didn't have to work?
- 4.She wasn't hungry, so she didn't eat anything.
- 5.Did he know that the shop wasn't open on Sundays?
