When do you use "was" and when do you use "were" in questions?

Use "was" with singular subjects: I, he, she, and it. Use "were" with plural subjects: you, we, and they. In questions, place "was" or "were" before the subject: "Was he at the meeting?" "Were they happy with the result?" Note that "you" always takes "were," even when referring to one person: "Were you tired?" (not "Was you tired?"). In very informal spoken English, some people say "was you," but this is not standard and should be avoided in writing and exams. A helpful trick: if the answer would be "he was," the question starts with "Was he?" — the subject and verb simply swap positions.

Why don't we use "did" with "was" and "were"?

The verb "be" is unique in English — it does not need the helper word "did" to form questions or negatives in past simple. While other verbs require "did" as a helper ("Did you go?"), "be" can move to the front of the sentence by itself: "Were you happy?" This is because "be" is both a main verb and a helper verb. The same thing happens in present simple: we say "Are you tired?" not "Do you be tired?" This pattern is consistent across tenses. A very common learner mistake is to say "Did you be late?" or "Did she was angry?" — both are wrong. Always use "Was she angry?" or "Were you late?" with the verb "be."

How do you give short answers with "was" and "were"?

Short answers with "was" and "were" follow a simple pattern: repeat the subject and the correct form of "be." For "Was she tired?" answer "Yes, she was" or "No, she wasn't." For "Were they at the park?" answer "Yes, they were" or "No, they weren't." Never add the main information in a short answer — just the subject and "was/were." In spoken English, positive short answers ("Yes, I was") cannot be contracted, and negative ones are usually contracted: "No, I wasn't" sounds natural, while "No, I was not" sounds more formal or emphatic.
