This technique creates a flashback effect in writing. Good narratives switch between past simple (moving the story forward) and past perfect (providing background). For example: "He opened the letter nervously. Nobody had written to him for months." The past perfect sentence adds depth and emotion without interrupting the story flow. Writers also use the past perfect to reveal character history: "She spoke perfect French. She had lived in Paris for ten years." This skill is highly valued in Cambridge B1-B2 writing examinations and is essential for producing well-structured narrative compositions.
