How do I show which action happened first in the past?

Use the past perfect (had + past participle) for the action that happened first and the past simple for the action that happened second: "When I got home, my sister had cooked dinner" — the cooking (past perfect) happened before the arriving (past simple). The past perfect acts like a time arrow pointing further back into the past. Signal words help identify the earlier action: "already" shows something was completed, "before" introduces the later event, "because" often introduces the cause (which happened first). Practise by asking yourself: "Which event happened first?" Then put that event in the past perfect.

Can I use two past perfect verbs in the same sentence?

Generally, only the earlier action takes the past perfect while the later action uses the past simple: "After she had eaten, she left." Using two past perfect verbs — "After she had eaten, she had left" — is grammatically unusual and sounds unnatural because the past perfect already marks which event came first. The exception is when both actions happened before a third past reference point and you want to list them together: "By the time I arrived, she had finished her work and had tidied the kitchen." Here, both finishing and tidying were completed before the arriving, so both can take the past perfect. In most exam contexts, pair one past perfect clause with one past simple clause.

Several words and phrases signal the earlier action and often appear with the past perfect. "Already" shows something was completed: "She had already eaten." "Before" introduces the later event: "Before he left, he had checked everything." "By the time" emphasises completion: "By the time we arrived, they had gone." "After" introduces the earlier event: "After she had finished, she relaxed." Cause words like "because" and "since" often introduce the earlier cause: "He was hungry because he hadn't eaten." In contrast, "then," "next," and "after that" usually connect events in the past simple.
