Where do "already," "just," and "never" go in a past perfect sentence?

These adverbs go between "had" and the past participle: "She had already left," "He had just arrived," "They had never seen it." This is the same position they take in the present perfect: "I have already eaten," "She has just called." In negative sentences, "not" comes before the adverb: "I hadn't already read the book." However, "never" already carries a negative meaning, so you do not add "not": "She had never been there" is correct, while "She hadn't never been there" is a double negative and incorrect in standard English.

What is the difference between "already" and "just" in the past perfect?

"Already" emphasises that an action was completed, often sooner than expected: "When I got to the station, the train had already left" — it left before I expected or hoped. "Just" emphasises how recently something happened — it means "a very short time before": "The train had just left when I arrived" — it left only moments before I got there. Both show that something happened before another past event, but "already" focuses on completion while "just" focuses on how recent the action was. In practice, these two adverbs are not combined in the same sentence — choose whichever best fits the meaning you want to express.

Can I use "never" instead of "had not" in the past perfect?

"Never" and "had not" are not the same. "Had not" (or "hadn't") is a simple negative — it says something did not happen before a specific moment: "I hadn't eaten lunch" (I did not eat that day). "Never" means "not at any time in the past up to that point" — it covers the entire period, not just one occasion: "I had never eaten sushi before that dinner" (at no point in my entire life up to then). Use "hadn't" for a specific missing action and "never" for zero lifetime experience. This difference often appears in B1 reading and listening tasks.
