What is the difference between shall and will?

In modern English, "will" is the standard way to talk about the future: "I will call you tomorrow." "Shall" is used mainly in questions with "I" and "we" to make offers and suggestions: "Shall I help you?" (offer) and "Shall we dance?" (suggestion). In these questions, "will" does not work the same way — "Will I help you?" sounds like you are asking about the future, not making an offer. In formal and legal English, "shall" expresses obligation or rules: "Passengers shall remain seated" means they must remain seated. In everyday conversation, especially in American English, "shall" is rarely used outside of offers and suggestions.

When do I use "Shall I" and "Shall we"?

Use "Shall I...?" when you want to offer to do something for another person: "Shall I carry your bags?" "Shall I turn on the heating?" You are volunteering your help. Use "Shall we...?" when you want to suggest doing something together with others: "Shall we order pizza?" "Shall we leave now?" You are proposing an activity. Both forms are questions — "shall" always comes before the subject. These two patterns are the most important uses of "shall" for English learners. In Cambridge B1 and B2 exams, questions often test whether students can recognise "Shall I" as an offer and "Shall we" as a suggestion.

Yes, but mainly in two situations. First, in questions with "I" and "we" for offers ("Shall I help?") and suggestions ("Shall we go?") — this use is still common in British English. Second, in formal, legal, and official texts where "shall" means "must" or "is required to": "The employee shall give one month's notice" (it is a rule). Outside these uses, "shall" has been largely replaced by "will" for talking about the future. American English speakers rarely use "shall" at all, except in the fixed phrase "shall we?" In everyday British English, you will still hear "shall" regularly for offers and suggestions, making it an important word to learn.
