"Could have" expresses a missed opportunity or unrealised possibility — something was possible, but it did not happen: "You could have told me" (you had the chance, but you chose not to). The emotional difference matters: "should have" carries a sense of blame or regret, while "could have" focuses more on what was possible. Compare: "I should have studied harder" (I regret not studying) vs "I could have studied harder" (I had the opportunity but chose not to).

How do I use must have for past deductions?

"Must have" + past participle expresses a strong conclusion about the past based on evidence you can see now: "The streets are wet — it must have rained last night" (I am almost certain it rained because I can see the evidence). "Must have" is not about obligation in the past — that is "had to": "I had to work late" (obligation), not "I must have worked late" (deduction). The negative past deduction uses "can't have" or "couldn't have," not "mustn't have": "She can't have seen us — she was looking the other way." This deduction pattern is one of the most commonly tested structures in Cambridge B2 and C1 exams.

"Would have" + past participle describes what you believe the result would be in an imaginary past situation — something that did not actually happen. It is most common in third conditional sentences: "If I had known about the problem, I would have fixed it" (but I didn't know, so I didn't fix it). "Would have" also expresses willingness that was prevented: "I would have helped, but nobody asked me" (I was willing, but the situation didn't allow it). The negative "wouldn't have" means the result would not have happened: "She wouldn't have passed without your help" (your help was essential). This structure appears regularly in B2 and C1 level grammar tests.
