What is the difference between need to and have to?

"Need to" focuses on practical necessity — something is required for things to work properly: "I need to charge my phone" (it is about to run out of battery). "Have to" focuses on external rules or obligations — someone or something else requires it: "I have to charge my phone before the flight" (the airline says electronic devices must be charged). In many situations, both are interchangeable: "I need to go" and "I have to go" are both natural. The main difference appears in the negative: "don't need to" and "don't have to" both mean "it is not necessary" and can be used in the same way with no real difference in meaning.

Can I use "needn't" instead of "don't need to"?

Yes, "needn't" (need not) is a more formal or British way of saying "don't need to." Both mean "it is not necessary": "You needn't worry" = "You don't need to worry." However, "needn't" is used much less in everyday spoken English and sounds quite formal. There is also "needn't have" + past participle for past situations where someone did something unnecessary: "You needn't have brought a gift" (you brought one, but it was not necessary). This is different from "didn't need to," which does not tell us whether the action happened or not: "I didn't need to cook" (maybe I cooked, maybe I didn't). Cambridge exams test this difference at B2 level.

How do I express obligation in the past and future with these verbs?

"Must" has no past or future form, so you need "had to" for the past and "will have to" for the future: "I had to work late yesterday," "She will have to take the exam again." "Need to" works in all tenses: "I needed to leave early" (past), "I will need to buy more milk" (future). "Have to" is equally flexible: "He had to call the doctor" (past), "We will have to wait" (future). Because "must" is limited to the present, "have to" and "need to" are more practical choices when you want to talk about obligation across different time frames. Understanding these tense differences is important for Cambridge B1 and B2 exam tasks where you must choose the correct form.
