What is the difference between 'a' and 'the' in English?

The second time you mention the same thing, use "the" because now both people know: "The wallet had fifty pounds inside." This pattern continues — once something has been introduced, it stays "the" for the rest of the conversation. Notice how stories often begin with "a": "Once upon a time, there was a king. The king lived in a castle. The castle was on a hill." Each new item gets "a," then becomes "the."

Yes, when both people already know which thing you mean without needing a first mention. This happens in three main situations. First, when something is unique — there is only one: "the sun," "the moon," "the internet." Second, when the situation makes it clear: "Can you open the window?" (both people can see which window). Third, when you add a specific detail: "the book on the table," "the woman in the red dress." In all three cases, "the" works because the listener already knows which one you mean, even though it is the first time you have mentioned it in the conversation.
