How do I spot adjective order errors quickly in an exam?

Use a three-step method. First, underline every adjective before the noun. Second, label each one with its OSASCOMP category (O for opinion, S for size, A for age, and so on). Third, check that the labels follow alphabetical OSASCOMP order from left to right — if they do not, the order is wrong. For comma errors, ask yourself: are these adjectives from the same OSASCOMP category? If yes, they are coordinate and need a comma. If no, they are cumulative and should have no comma. This systematic approach works faster than relying on instinct, especially under exam time pressure in Cambridge B2 First.

Why do some adjective order errors sound less obvious than others?

Errors between distant OSASCOMP categories sound obviously wrong because the contrast is clear: "a wooden beautiful table" (material before opinion) is immediately noticeable. However, errors between neighbouring categories are harder to detect: "an old large house" (age before size) sounds nearly acceptable because age and size sit next to each other in the sequence. Similarly, origin-before-colour errors ("an Italian red car" instead of "a red Italian car") can sound plausible either way. The closer two categories are in OSASCOMP, the subtler the error. This is why B2 exams focus on these neighbouring-category errors rather than obvious reversals.
